08/17 Compass Guide Comments By Dr. Daniel Daves
17-Aug Job 39-40, 1 Thess. 3-4, Psalms 91-95, Proverbs 17
Proverbs 17:4 (NIV) A wicked man listens to evil lips; a liar pays attention to a malicious tongue.
Wickedness has a certain sound to it, as righteousness also has a certain sound. Really, they are two different spirits. One is dark, disconnected, and filled with every evil that opposes goodness and God. The other is filled with light and represents (at least to some degree) the life of God, Jesus, salvation, and love.
All men will gravitate to their spiritual kind. Darkened people will gravitate towards evil, liars and malicious people. But the righteous will gravitate to love, kindness and life.
When I was pastoring churches in my younger days, I learned that a gossip, a critical person, and a malicious talker would always surface those who had dark intentions, or those who struggled with their flesh. Whether it was from past hurts, attacks on their person, or abusive situations in their past, those susceptible to listening to lies, malice and evil lips would be the ONLY ONES who would invite malicious talkers into their presence. They would listen, form opinions, develop anger, resentment and judgment against others, and they would unveil themselves in the process. You will always find darkened people gravitating towards one another, and the righteous will always gravitate to one another as well.
Ask God to give you hunger for righteousness and to unveil "the lie" and malice whenever you hear it. Coming boldly into the light will cause malicious people to NEVER bring their lies and evil into your presence, for they will fear that you will unveil and expose it.
