The Parable of the Ten Virgins
Matthew 25: 1-13 (NIV) “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Five of them were foolish and five were wise. 3 The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. 4 The wise, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. 5 The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep. 6 “At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’ 7 “Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. 8 The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’ 9 “ ‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’ 10 “But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut. 11 “Later the others also came. ‘Sir! Sir!’ they said. ‘Open the door for us!’ 12 “But he replied, ‘I tell you the truth, I don’t know you.’ 13 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.
This parable has some twists in it.
1. The wise virgins brought oil with their lamps, but the foolish dragged a lamp around with no oil.
2. The bridegroom was a long time in coming and they all fell asleep waiting for him.
3. When he finally appeared, the virgins with the oil would not share their oil with the foolish virgins.
4. The wise virgins with oil in their lamps went in with Him to the banquet and the door was shut.
5. The Lord replied to the foolish virgins that he didn't know them, as they arrived at the closed door of the wedding banquet.
6. The foolish virgins were unable to enter into the wedding feast, paying the ultimate price for their foolishness.
This parable can be used in many areas of life. Whether being on the front line of business, ready for the next wave of change in society, or seeing your life and ministry explode when the new day appears and the door is briefly opened.
I always wonder why the foolish virgins bothered carrying a lantern around with no oil in it. What were they thinking? Was it only for appearance? Was it for the purpose of being accepted among virgins? And what kind of extra price did the wise virgins have to pay to carry the extra weight of oil around with them? They carried it everywhere and considered it very valuable. They guarded and protected it. They treasured this oil which would someday provide light at the midnight hour when the bridegroom would arrive, bringing them into the wedding banquet and closing the door.
Amazingly, the bridegroom didn't come at the expected time. I am sure that He was not late, but I have learned that the Lord seems to never be early. When the word came that He was arriving, they all trimmed their lamps but there was not enough oil in the lamps of the foolish to sustain the light through the night. The wicks must have had something on them to burn, but certainly not enough to carry them through the night hours. This tells me that we had better have a source of oil. We need to be stored up. We need to know how to access this oil, trim the lamps, and keep the light burning even through the darkest hours of night's end.
The foolish virgins had none of these preparations made. But they went to buy oil. Evidently, the purchase made at the wrong time would not get them into the wedding banquet. The wise had purchased oil at the right time. That purchase was acceptable. The last-minute purchase was not acceptable. At the end of the day, those making an emergency purchase of oil were not among those that Jesus knew. He told them at the door as they knocked, "I don't know you." OUCH!
Let this story sink in and convict you. Buy oil for the purpose that you are called to. Don't delay. Pay the price for the oil that will sustain your calling, vision, goals, and targets, even through the night hours. Remember that your Compass Guide training, as well as your 25-word statement, will help carry you through the darkest of hours and into the glorious banquet of "Well done, good and faithful servant."
Buy the oil. Carry the oil. Pay the price for the oil that will work in your lamp when needed. Know how to keep your lantern lit with the wick trimmed. This is the discipline of kings!
