Proverbs 17:17 (NIV) 17 A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
There are two types of people we need to identify in our lives. Friends and brothers. Now everyone will tell you they are your friend, and the use of the word "brother" is rampant, especially in church and social groups. But true friends and brothers have substantial qualities that can easily be identified. Know the difference!
We all go through good and bad times. Everyone wants to be your friend during good times, because life is good and easy and everyone benefits by hanging together. But when hard times hit, failure comes, poverty strikes or a life consequence comes your way, your true friends will stick with you and love you through it. Their love is born of God and it's stronger than good times. This love transcends good and bad times.
You will not know who your brothers are until adversity hits. When the attack comes upon you, no matter whether it's by people, devils or circumstances, it's then that your brothers will arise. Brothers are BORN out of your true friends. They are born for adversity to stand with you, hold your hands up, defend your back side and fight to the death with you. Why would they go to such lengths and risk so much? Because they are your brothers (sisters). God has brought them to you for your season of adversity. Look for them and receive them. Honor them and listen to them. God sent them to you to help you through adversity.
Talk is cheap. "Hey brother, how's it going?". But a true brother will know how it's going and will be committed to help ease the pain, fight alongside of you, and help you secure the promise of God for your life. And your true friends will love you, no matter what you've done, where you've been, or how you've slipped and fallen.
Identify these people in your life and honor them. Let them know that you recognize the gift of God in them to be your friend, brother or sister. God indeed has sent them to you to help in times of trouble.
For you and I, let's be a true FRIEND that sticks closer than a BROTHER to those whom God has called us to.
Proverbs 18:24 (NIV) 24 A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
